Where is the Money Going? Information for Canadian Donors
We have partnered with the Edmonton Community Foundation on Nancy’s Butterfly Fund, this will be an ongoing fund that we will continue holding events to raise money for. Each year a portion of the fund will go back into the Edmonton community, specifically into charities and organizations that assist domestic violence victims through financial aid and the provision of shelter. Therefore donor dollars will go into this endowment fund which will then be distributed to local shelters and organizations.

Upon doing research we had learned that over double the number of residents in shelters in Alberta last year needed help and couldn’t access it, through our fundraising we hope we can contribute to increasing the amount of space in these facilities. Another issue that worries us is the amount of time one is allowed to stay at a shelter, with the lack of space this is usually a month, which in our eyes isn't a sufficient amount of time to get back on your feet, especially if you have children.

Domestic violence is a gender neutral issue, having said that, our focus is primarily women and children. This is not an exclusive statement to other victims of domestic violence, as we are aware that men can also be victims of such violence. We have chosen to focus on individuals in similar situations to what my sister endured prior to her death.

When deciding how to start this fund we looked at many different avenues to achieve our goal, which is to increase awareness and give back to services that help domestic violence victims in and around Edmonton. In setting up this fund with the Edmonton Community foundation we feel we are best achieving our goal as this will ensure a longstanding relationship with the community of Edmonton where a yearly donation will be given to local shelters and/ or organizations based on needs within the community.
